Rules, Belief Functions and Default Logic
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper describes a natural framework for rules , based on belief functions , which includes a repre s entation of numerical rules, default rules and rules allowing and rules not allowing contraposition. In particular it justifies the use of th e Dempster-Shafer Th eory for representing a particular class of rules , Belief calculated being a lower probability given cer tain independence assumptions on an underlying s pace. It s h ows h ow a belief function framework can be generalised to other logics , including a general Monte-Carlo algorithm for calculating belief, and h ow a version of Reiter's Default Logic can be seen as a limiting case of a belief function formalism.

What is a Default Priority?
The notion of default priority has played a central role in default reasoning research. We show that Pearl’s Z-ranking of default rules need not always correspond to priorities. System Z can still be used for priorities, but perhaps not in the obvious manner. Rather than the Z-ranking of rules, we show that the Zrankings of the negations of the material counterparts of rules correspond naturall...
متن کاملDefault Reasoning with Contexts
We describe a system that combines default reasoning with contexts. Contexts are arranged in a hierarchy where more specific contexts represent revisions of the state of belief in more general contexts. We describe our algorithm for default reasoning in a context hierarchy and provide a translation of our representation into a default logic theory whose inferences agree with our algorithm. We c...
متن کاملConstraints in Nonmonotonic Reasoning
We report on the use of constraints to govern partial models of rst-order logic. These models are constructed using systems of default rules, as in the default logic of Reiter, but where Reiter's rules build logical theories, our rules build models. Our approach takes advantage of domain-theoretic notions. A system of default rules is a straightforward generalization of Scott's notion of inform...

Katsuno and Mendelzon have distinguished two abstract frameworks for reasoning about change: theory revision and theory update. Theory revision involves a change in knowledge or belief with respect to a static world. By contrast, theory update involves a change of knowledge or belief in a changing world. In this paper we are concerned with theory update. Winslett has shown that theory update sh...
